The angel was an English gold coin introduced by King Edward IV in 1464-5.
The coin had a value of 6 shillings and 8 pence when it was introduced and. on the obverse, featured a depiction of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon; a retelling of the bible (according to the ‘Book of Revelations‘ Michael led God's armies against Satan – represented by the dragon).
The other side (reverse) of the beautifully designed coin shows a ship at sea with arms and rays of sun at the masthead.
The coin changed value over time and through different reigns – and a half-angle featuring the same design was also introduced - but it finally went out of circulation in the 17th century when Charles II introduced milled coins, struck by machine rather than hand. It was at that point, in 1663, that the guinea became the standard gold coin.
A little more about the coin's features
The Henry VIII angel shown above features a depiction of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon.
The following text is seen around the reverse of the coin:
'HENRIC VIII DI GRA REX AGL & FR'
…which translates as 'Henry VIII by the Grace of God King of England and France'.
The obverse shows an English ship with the King's arms in the centre of the design.
The legend reads 'PER CRVCE TVA SALVA NOS XPC REDE'
…which translate as 'Through Thy cross save us, Christ Redeemer'.

The coin replaced the gold 'noble' coin and so was also known as the 'angel-noble'.

Auctioneers Dix Noonan Webb sold a half angel for£34,000 in 2017 – the coin had been found in a field by a metal detectorist and is one of just a few known to have been minted during the brief reign of Richard III.

There is a modern version. The Isle of Man produce an angel coin each Christmas, available in a number of sizes and metals, which can cost from around £75 for the smallest version.

The angel was an Englishgoldcoin introduced by Edward IV in 1465. It was patterned after the Frenchangelot or ange, which had been issued since 1340. The name derived from its representation of the archangelMichael slaying a dragon. As it was considered a new issue of the noble, it was also called the angel-noble.[1]

In 1472, the half-angel was introduced with a similar design weighing 40 grains (2.6 grams) with a diameter of 20 to 21 millimeters.

Value[edit]
The angel varied in value from 6 shillings 8 pence to 11 shillings between Edward's reign and the time of James I. Under Charles I, it was last coined in 1642.[1][2]
- In 1526 during the reign of Henry VIII, it increased to seven shillings and six pence (7 s. 6 d.) or 90 pence.
- In 1544, it increased again to eight shillings (8 s.) or 96 pence.
- In 1550 during the reign of Edward VI it increased to ten shillings (10 s.) or 120 pence or £1⁄2.
- In 1612 during the reign of James I it increased to eleven shillings (11 s.) or 132 pence.
- In 1619 it decreased to ten shillings (10 s.) and at that point in time it weighed 70 grains (4.5 g).

In 1663, Charles II replaced the existing coinage with entirely new designs struck by machine ('milled'). The standard gold coin then became the Guinea.
Social impact[edit]
The angel was such an iconic coin that many English pubs were named after it. The Angel Inn in Islington (after which the Angel tube station is named) was one of these.
The angel was traditionally given to sufferers of the disease known as 'king's evil', in a mediaeval ceremony intended to heal them with the 'royal touch'. After it was no longer minted, medals with the same device (called touch pieces) were given instead.[1]
The 1610 General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in Glasgow was named after the coins. M'Crie writes: 'The bribery practised at this Assembly was shamefully notorious. Golden coins, called angels, were so plentifully distributed among the ministers, that it was called, by way of derision, the angelical Assembly.'[3]
